Essential Discussions: Black Male Achievement in Higher Education

Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of Monroe Community College, State University of New York, I am pleased to invite you to “Black Male Achievement in Higher Education” — the fifth event in our series of Essential Discussions: Conversations at Monroe Community College. The purpose of the series is to explore urgent topics that are shaping the postsecondary agenda.

MCC will host this daylong colloquium on Thursday, May 7, 2015 from 8:30 am to 3:15 pm in the Warshof Conference Center of the R. Thomas Flynn Campus Center. The event will provide an opportunity to engage in conversations about our roles and responsibilities to help African-American males achieve academic success in higher education.

The morning speaker will be Dr. Shaun R. Harper, associate professor and executive director of the Center for the Study of Race and Equity in Education at the University of Pennsylvania, and author of over 90 peer-reviewed journal articles and academic publications. The afternoon speaker will be Dr. Shaun Nelms, Educational Partnership Organization deputy superintendent for the University of Rochester, former deputy superintendent of schools for the Greece Central School District and chief of schools for the Rochester City School District. The response panels will include some of Greater Rochester area’s leading educators, community and business leaders, and current and former MCC students who have successfully transferred to four-year colleges and universities.

You will soon receive additional information on how to register for the colloquium. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Sheila Strong, executive assistant to the president, at <mailto:EssentialDiscussions@monroecc.edu>. You can also share your comments on this event or topic on Twitter using the hashtag #MCCdiscussion. The event is free and open to the public. I hope you will plan to join us!

MCC is dedicated to improving student success in higher education. Previous Essential Discussions at MCC focused on STEM education, college completion, workforce education, and learning environments.

I look forward to seeing you in May at what promises to be an essential conversation.
