"Safe Zone" Project Now Offers Two Training Options

Beginning in January 2012, the Safe Zone project at MCC will offer both Basic Safe Zone Training and a new option, a “Train-the-Trainer” seminar for those who want to earn certification to facilitate basic Safe Zone workshops themselves in the future.  If you’re interested in facilitating Safe Zone workshops yourself, or as a co-facilitator with another certified trainer, this training session  is for you.  Note: You must have completed the Basic “Safe Zone” Training (either in an earlier semester or in January 2012) in order to register for the “Train-the-Trainer” workshop.

We will offer both workshops, two days apart, in January.  If you’ve never had Safe Zone Basic Training, and you want to become a Safe Zone workshop facilitator, you may register for Safe Zone I on January 11 and Safe Zone II on January 13.

Safe Zone I: Basic Training.  Learn what it means to be an ally to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) colleagues and students, and understand the concept of campus “safe zones” and the expectations for those who choose to participate by displaying a Safe Zone sticker.  Safe Zone I: Basic Training is offered on Wednesday, January 11, 2011, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Flynn Campus Center Forum on the Brighton campus.  (Remember, this is the prerequisite for Safe Zone II: Train-the-Trainer.)

Safe Zone II: Train-the-Trainer:  This three-hour training session is for faculty, staff, and students who want to become Safe Zone I: Basic Training facilitators themselves.  If you are comfortable making public presentations, and you support Safe Zones, this training is for you.  This workshop is offered on Friday, January 13, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Flynn Campus Center Forum on the Brighton campus.  The prerequisite for this workshop is Safe Zone I: Basic Training.

To register, please email Jean Parker "
mailto:jparker@monroecc.edu" by Wednesday, January 4.  Registration for each workshop is limited to the first 30 people who respond.  Please specify which of the two workshops (Safe Zone I and/or Safe Zone II) you want to attend.  If you want to register for Safe Zone II: Train-the-Trainer only, let me know that you have previously completed the Basic Training.

Light refreshments, coffee, tea and water will be served both days.
