Tell your students: Federal financial aid application (FAFSA) changes for 2010-2011

For the 2010-11 academic year, the U.S. Department of Education has made a couple of significant changes to the FAFSA on the Web.

The first change is FAFSA Simplification.  With new upgrades in technology, the U.S. Department of Education has improved the navigation of the FAFSA on the Web application, as well as reducing the number of pages on the application. Additionally, modal boxes, flyover text, and the use of field instructions augment the display of instructions and help text.

The second significant change is the IRS Date Retrieval Tool for the FAFSA on the Web.  Beginning in the summer of 2010, financial aid applicants using FAFSA on the Web will be able to use a new online tool developed by the IRS and the U.S. Department of Education.  This tool will allow applicants to import their income and tax data directly from the IRS and transfer the information to the FAFSA on the Web.

The IRS Data Retrieval Tool will be available to first time applicants as well renewal FAFSA on the Web applicants.

To use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, applicants and parents must have:
-  A valid SSN and Federal Student Aid PIN.
-  Completed a 2009 federal tax return.
-  No change in marital status since 12/31/2009
