College has growing pains but wins praise from many quarters

(February 25, 2007) — Every morning, Trelawney McKnight gets into her car — or walks when it's warm — from her Joseph Avenue home to school at Monroe Community College's downtown Damon City Campus.

Across town, Kyle Madden of Henrietta makes his commute to the often-packed parking lots at MCC's large Brighton campus.

The school they both step into is an educational, economic and athletic powerhouse. It boasts more area high school graduates than any other area school, vast numbers of area workers getting job training or retraining, a payroll of more than 2,000 and four sports teams claiming national titles last school year. The two-year college also has many of the same features found at a four-year school — housing, a student center full of clubs and organizations and fundraising under way to build an athletic complex.
