MCC at the Puerto Rican Festival Needs Your Help

The Diversity Council will once again sponsor the MCC booth at the Puerto Rican festival.  I am thrilled with the college’s commitment to accessibility for our Latino community.  We did a great job representing MCC last year and I’m thankful for the opportunity to continue this tradition.

The challenge this year is that we have only two weeks to pull together a top-notch presence like we did last year.  The festival date is the weekend of July 20-22.  There is much to do and we learned from our efforts last year.  I think our experience and enthusiasm can match that of last year.

Challenge #1: Staffing the MCC Booth.
We desperately need volunteers who can staff the MCC booth.  Volunteers work in pairs for a four hour shift, attend FAQ and website training beforehand, keep statistics on booth visitors, and get into the festival for free.  The shifts are 12-4 p.m.  or  4-8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday; 12-3 p.m. and 3-6 p.m. on Sunday.  You do not have to be bilingual in order to volunteer.  If there is a shift you are interested in working, please email me and let me know.

Challenge #2: Form working committees.
There are many tasks that can be accomplished by 2-3 person committees.  The committees are:
  • Booth set up - Thursday July 19th at 6pm
  • Booth break-down – Sunday July 22 at 6pm.  Return items to MCC drop off point on Monday July 23.
  • Statistics – update stat sheet from last year and inform volunteers of method of keeping statistics on contacts.
  • Parade organizer – connect with PR Parade committee, complete forms for entry, organize students, staff, and alumni to march in parade.
  • Collect donations – work with multiple offices on campus to donate goods to the booth for giveaways.
  • Technology – work with campus technology services to provide remote access to BANNER self-service and INB.
  • Photographs – someone will need to capture the entire three days.  Photograph each shift, the parade, stage announcements, etc as it relates to MCC.
  • Facilities – work with MCC Facilities department for power cords and other items.
  • Water cooler – a suggestion for improvement from last year.  Provide a large cooler with ice and water for MCC staff working the booth.  Replenish as needed.

Current MCC Students and Alumni are welcome to join us.  Call (292-3196) or email me at mrizzo@monroecc.edu and let me know if you can volunteer to staff the booth, and if there is a committee you want to join.

I’m looking forward to hearing from you.
