Governor Cuomo Directs Flags to Half-Saff for Fallen Soldier

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has directed that flags on state government buildings be flown at half-staff tomorrow, November 8, in honor of Capt. Andrew D. Byers, a native of Clarence, Erie County, who died in Afghanistan Thursday.

"On behalf of all New Yorkers, I extend sincere condolences to Capt. Byers’ fellow soldiers, friends and family,” Governor Cuomo said. "We are saddened by this loss and join his loved ones in honoring Capt. Byers’ bravery and service to our nation."

Capt. Byers, 30, died of wounds sustained while engaging enemy forces in Kunduz Afghanistan. He was assigned to Company B, 2nd Battalion 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) which is based at Fort Carson Colorado.

Governor Cuomo has directed that the flags on all state buildings be lowered to half-staff in honor of and in tribute to New York service members and those stationed in New York who are killed in action or die in a combat zone. Flags should return to full-staff on Wednesday, November 9.
