The Counseling and Advising Center reviewed the advising guidelines and submitted a recommended a change in the GPA minimum for mandatory academic advising as well as advising requirements for transferred and readmitted students. The Academic Advising Council researched the implications of these changes and found that that there were no statistically significant differences in the retention rates of students with a GPA below 2.25 who were mandated to be advised and the students with a GPA above 2.25 who were not mandated to be advised. We have approved the following changes effective spring 2012:
Continuing Students
Mandated advising for continuing students will shift from the 2.25 GPA requirement to 2.0 GPA. Students with a 2.0 GPA or above are considered to be in a good academic standing and eligible to graduate if all degree requirements have been met. The change in the GPA requirement will not affect or alter other requirements, including programs that require students to seek advisement.
Transfer or Readmitted Students
Transfer students have met the admission requirements upon acceptance, and have previously experienced a college environment. As such, advising will not be required for these students. For students readmitted to MCC, in the event that the student left the College in poor academic standing, the Admissions Office will follow-up directly with the student.
All students will still be able to participate in the advising process if they wish.
