Take Our Daughters & Sons to Work Day – an Educational Program

The photo collages attached to today’s article show many groups of parents and kids on Take Our Daughters & Sons to Work Day, April 27, 2006, sponsored by the American Association of Women in Community College. There’s also a collage showing many of the volunteers who helped make this a success.

We did hear that some schools didn’t permit their students to attend because of questions about the educational value of the Take Our Daughters & Sons to Work Day events, presumably at other employer sites. We hope that we can address that question should it come up again. MCC had academic activities such as Engineering (bridge building, sumo-bot and auto safety), Biology (learning about plants in the greenhouse and CSI brought to life), Mathematics (fun with math statistics & probability), Business Law (mock trial in which the children were the jurors), Office & Computer Programs (make your own web site), Applied Tech (how does an engine work), Hospitality (cake & pastry decorating), and so many more. There were workshops on career development and the realities of college life. There were sessions that combined games and learning such as the $$Million Dollar$$ Quiz and the secret code scavenger hunt.

We hope all the participants enjoyed and learned from this event. We also hope you enjoy these photos. Please check the AAWCC website (A-Z Index, American Association of Women in Community Colleges) where you will likely find even more photos from the day.
