Passing of Janis Tremper Dowd


I am saddened to share the news that Janis Tremper Dowd, MCC retiree in Institutional Advancement, passed away on March 22, 2016.

Janis began her MCC career as Community Service Director in 1975. In 1985, she was promoted from associate professor to professor and the following year accepted a new position as Director of Public Affairs. She retired in 1990.

Janis completed her graduate work in philosophy at the University of Rochester in 1952. She held an A.M. in philosophy from Boston Universtiy and an A.B. with honors from Rockford College, Illinois. During her years at MCC Janis helped move MCC from a relatively traditional posture as a community college to that of an acclaimed model for other institutions in outreach, nontraditional and non-credit programming. Her commitment and sense of social responsibility were well known and widely respected.
