On Saturday, Nov. 13, 1500- 2000 people attended the Eighth Annual Rochester Children's Book Festival in the Warshof Conference Center on MCC's Brighton Campus. Kids made writing journals, wrote stories, played rhyming games, and created puppet shows at One Busy Bookworm Place. Families gathered for picture book readings in the Read-to-Me Corner and crowded around local authors and illustrators to have their books autographed. Adults and older children attended workshops given by authors and illustrators in Workshop Alley. MCC students inhabited a large bookworm costume, snaking their way around the conference center, singing and dancing.
MCC English faculty member Gail Bouk, who helped orchestrate the day-long event, recently reported that MCC's Child Care Center will receive approximately $1600 from Book Festival proceeds. In addition, each one of those 38 authors who participated has donated a single copy of their book to the MCC library for the children's literature collection.
According to event organizer Carol Johmann, "The facilities were absolutely fantastic, the MCC faculty, staff, students and peer mentors were helpful and ever-present. Everyone wants to come back... everything was set up beautifully, fully staffed with volunteers, and very conducive to a good time by all."
The event was an overwhelming success because of the enthusiastic efforts of many dedicated individuals throughout the College community.
