News from the March 23 MCC Board of Trustees' Meeting


The MCC Board of Trustees took the following actions at yesterday’s meeting:

* Accepted the interim financial report as of January 1, 2009.


* Authorized the purchase of items over $10,000 for the month of January 2009.

* Transferred $119,045 between accounts.

* Approved a ground lease with Empire State College of 2.27 acres situated at the east end of the south campus development zone for a term of 50 years at an annual rental of $30,000/year plus escalators every five years, subject to the approval of the Monroe County Legislature and the State University of New York.

* Approved the appointment of Kathleen Schiefen as dean, Academic Services, Damon City Campus, effective July 1, 2009.

* Approved the retirement of Thomas Fittipaldi (VaPA) and John "Rick" Kuempel (Chemistry and Geosciences).

* Approved the early retirement of Carol Irvine (VaPA).

* Approved the promotions of associate professors, assistant professors, instructors, as listed, effective Sept. 1, 2009. (See related MCC Daily Tribune announcement for list of those receiving promotions.)

* Approved the reappointment of non-contract, administrative, faculty, technical assistants/advisors as listed at the ranks and titles indicated for the academic year beginning Sept. 1, 2009 and ending June 30, 2010 for 10-month personnel, or August 31, 2010 for twelve-month personnel.


Two information items were presented:
* Board Chair Rich Guon invited Bonnie Connell, chair, Faculty Senate's Special Committee on Administrative Affairs (SCAA), and Board Vice Chair Kenneth Goode, chair of the Presidential Search Advisory Committee, to report on the committees' progress in the Presidential Search process.


* League for Innovation in the Community College President and CEO Gerardo de los Santos shared a presentation on the League's membership, priorities and current initiatives with the Board. He also reviewed MCC's current membership status.


Interim President Tyree reported the following to the Board:
* Enrollment is "booming" across all MCC locations, emphasizing the impact of online students and students transferring to MCC from four-year colleges ("reverse transfers").


* MCC is receiving good response from legislators in regards to support of public higher education/community college funding within the state budget. MCC continues to develop its own budget based on anticipated state budget scenarios.
* MCC's first Scholars' Day (March 21) gave students and faculty an opportunity to showcase their scholarly activities. President Tyree hopes it's a "first in a series" of future Scholars' Days.

* A student involved in the November 11, 2008 on-campus incident has made a "notice of claim" against the college.

* MCC's men's and women's basketball teams represented the college well during season and post-season competition.
