STEP awarded Finger Lakes WIRED grant to support science & technology pre-collegiate summer program

  MCC’s Science & Technology Entry Program (STEP) is the proud recipient of a “Fostering Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Skills” grant from Finger Lakes WIRED.

This grant will create the WIRED track of the Pre-Collegiate Summer Program at Damon City Campus which aims to encourage and support minority high school students to pursue college and careers in the sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in the Finger Lakes region.  The project uses a multifaceted approach to empower participants to:

* realize the breadth of STEM careers;
* experience numerous career sites for STEM professions in the Finger Lakes region;
* acquire writing, mathematical, and laboratory science skills required to pursue post-secondary education leading to STEM careers;
* acquire skills necessary to adjust to and be successful at college (goal setting, time management, understanding college structure and policies, study skills, etc.);
* identify realistic post-secondary education options as well as understand the requirements that are necessary for admission to these pathways; and
* inform parents of participants of STEM career opportunities in the region.

The components of the proposed 5-week summer program are as follows:
* coursework in writing and mathematics for the SAT;
* hands-on science enrichment activities;
* presentations from local STEM professionals and site visits to local STEM businesses;
* a job shadow experience in the STEM field of the student’s interest;
* Finger Lakes region college visits; and
* parent/student Finger Lakes STEM field trip.

By promoting STEM careers to students from historically underserved groups, this project works to close the achievement gap and build a skilled work force for the Finger Lakes region.

Participation in the WIRED track of the Pre-Collegiate Summer Program is free.  Students will receive breakfast, lunch, bus passes, and a stipend.  The program is open to fifteen students aged 16-18.  There will be a competitive application process.
