MCC and H1N1: Isolation Rooms

The MCC Public Health Emergency Planning Committee is preparing for the possibility that students, staff, faculty and guests may experience rapid onset of H1N1 symptoms while on campus. The symptoms can be debilitating and make it inadvisable for an individual to drive. We are proactively planning for this possibility with the establishment of isolation rooms on the Brighton and Damon City campuses.

The Brighton Campus isolation room will include the Gilman Lounge (for intake purposes) and the hallway that extends from the Flynn Campus Center atrium to the Gilman Lounge. The Damon City Campus isolation room will be in the Massage Therapy Clinic. When they are activated, nursing personnel will be assigned to each in order to monitor individuals experiencing influenza-like symptoms. The isolation rooms are for individuals who cannot immediately leave campus; all others should be encouraged to self-isolate off-campus immediately.

When will the isolation rooms be activated? Well, that’s hard to predict. It depends on the spread of the illness. Their activation will be announced via the MCC Daily Tribune. When they are activated, they will be operational 8:45 a.m. until 4:45 p.m.; at all other times, individuals too ill to leave campus on their own accord should be directed to Public Safety on either campus. (These
rooms will be unavailable for other uses during their activation as isolation rooms.)

If you have reserved one of the Brighton Campus conference rooms, you will be contacted by Campus Events when the isolation rooms are activated. They will work with you to schedule an alternate room. This may require moving to a classroom space. If you have questions about meeting room availability, please contact Campus Events at ext. 2010. All other questions regarding MCC’s H1N1 response can be directed to Public Health Emergency Planning Committee Co-chairs Mr. Dick Ryther, associate vice president, and Dr. Susan Baker, assistant vice president, both of the Student Services Division.

Thank you for your continued assistance and flexibility as we, together, address this public health issue.
