Rochester AmeriCorps Highlighted on 13WHAM's Many Voices, Many Visions


Rochester AmeriCorps member Alexandria Hubble and Program Coordinator Garth Freeman were interviewed by Norma Holland for the Many Voices Many Visions program on 13WHAM TV. Mr. Freeman spoke about the requirements and benefits of serving in AmeriCorps and highlighted the important supports members in the Rochester AmeriCorps program are providing to students in Rochester City Schools and educational programs that partner with the RCSD.

Ms. Hubble, currently serving her second term in the program, spoke about the academic and social-emotional supports that she is able to provide to students at her host site, RCSD school #44. Alex also talked about her own career path and how she plans to use the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award, a benefit of service in AmeriCorps, to help pay for her degree in Library Science with the end goal of becoming a school librarian. The segment aired on Sunday February 25th and can be seen online.

AmeriCorps is a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service that engages people of all ages and backgrounds in strengthening America's communities through service. Rochester AmeriCorps is an education focused program in which members serve in Rochester City schools and community organizations that partner with the schools with a mission to improve academic engagement, college and career readiness, and positive school climate. Members commit to serving full time, at least 1700 over a 48-week term, and receive the following benefits for their service:

* Bi-weekly living allowance of $522 (pre-tax)
* Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $5,815 (upon program completion)
* National Service Forbearance on qualified student loans
* No-cost health insurance
* Child care subsidy for dependents 12 and under (if eligible)
* Specialized training and ongoing professional development and networking opportunities.
* SNAP – Food Stamps (AmeriCorps living allowance cannot be considered when determining SNAP eligibility)
