The Harlem Renaissance was the name given to the cultural, social and artistic explosion that took place in Harlem between the end of World War 1 and the middle of the 1930s. During this period, Harlem was a cultural center, drawing black writers, artists, musicians, photographers, poets and scholars.
Shawn Dunwoody, Community activist and knowledgeable historian on the Harlem Renaissance, was the recipient of the 2010 Lillian Fairchild Award for his tireless advocacy for creative expression, especially his longstanding commitment to various youth programs in the community. Dunwoody is executive director of FOUR WALLS Art Gallery in Rochester and sits on the boards of a wide variety of Rochester-area arts ventures, including ArtWalk, (Multi-Use Community Cultural Center), Rochester Fashion Week, Cornell Cooperative Extension, Creative-Hue, and others. He also has shown his own work in galleries such as Hallwalls, ROCO, St. John Fisher College, and the University of Rochester's Hartnett Gallery.
