Announcing The World Maps Gallery!

Announcing THE WORLD MAPS GALLERY!

In celebration of International Education Week and Geography Awareness Week, the Office of Global Education and International Services and MCC’s Geography Program are excited to announce the installation of THE WORLD MAPS GALLERY - a permanent gallery of 16 world maps showcasing aspects of human geography, physical geography, and geospatial technology.

Geography and GIST Certificate Update
The World Maps Gallery is also a celebration of SUNY’s approval of a new A.S. degree in Geography and Geospatial Information Science Technology (GIST) Certificate (awaiting NYSED approval).  The A.S. degree in Geography will make graduation and transfer more seamless for student’s going on to earn four-year degrees in geography or a related field.  The degree will provide students with four concentrations to choose from: Physical Geography, Human Geography, Geospatial Technology, and/or Regional Geography.   The Geospatial Information Science and Technology (GIST) Certificate will allow graduates to earn employment in the geospatial field within one year, and includes a capstone course that provides students with the opportunity to intern.

The World Maps Gallery

These maps have been installed throughout the Brighton Campus and will be identifiable by a black frame and a sign above that reads The World Maps Gallery.  In addition, posters of the maps will be on display in the Brighton Campus Center Atrium and at Damon City Campus in the 4th Floor Atrium all week.

As in an art gallery or museum, the maps will have a display label explaining the framed map.  The display label will also feature a QR Code that when scanned with a smart phone, tablet or laptop will reveal links to additional information and ways for students to interact.

This project is truly collaborative: it was funded by an MCC Foundation grant; developed by the Office of Global Education and International Services and MCC’s Geography Program; students from GEG 131 Cartography class created a map of the maps in the gallery; the DCC Library assisted with populating the QR Codes; several faculty members helped curate the maps; the Print Shop printed & mounted most maps in house; and the frames, signage and maps were installed by our Facilities staff.
