Community Fridays for a Cause

The next “Community Fridays for a Cause” is Friday, February 4th.

Community Fridays for a Cause will join efforts with the American Association of Women in Community Colleges (AAWCC) to celebrate the work of the American Heart Association.  This Friday dress casually and wear RED in support of heart health awareness.  Donations will be made to the American Heart Association, February’s recipient of donations raised through the “Community Fridays for a Cause” program and the AAWCC “Go Red Day”.

The American Heart Association (AHA) is a non-profit organization that fosters appropriate cardiac care in an effort to reduce disability and deaths caused by cardiovascular disease and stroke.  The AHA is a national voluntary health agency whose mission is: “Building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke.”

Most countries face already high, and increasing, rates of cardiovascular disease.  Each year, heart disease kills more Americans than cancer. In recent years, cardiovascular risk in women has been increasing and has killed more women than breast cancer.

A recent study has shown vascular injury accumulates from adolescence, making primary prevention efforts necessary from childhood.

By the time that heart problems are detected, the underlying cause, coronary artery disease (atherosclerosis), is usually quite advanced, having progressed for decades.  The American Heart Association strives to educate the public on the importance of preventing atherosclerosis by modifying risk factors, such as

Physical Excercise: "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physical_exercise"
Avoidance of Smoking: "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tobacco_smoking".

Donations will be collected in each department, or through the AAWCC-MCC Chapter.  All checks should be made out to the American Heart Association.  Donation envelopes have been returned to the departments for reuse on February 4th.  Please bring the donation envelopes to Jodee Biller in the Controller’s Office by 4:00 pm on Friday.

Thank you in advance for your support!
