College Readiness Symposium Gains Media Coverage

News8 (WROC-TV) and WXXI News (AM 1370) interviewed Kate Smith, interim dean of Interdisciplinary Programs, and Dr. Michael McDonough, provost and vice president of Academic Services, respectively on the significance of MCC’s College Readiness: Bridging the Transition symposium. The reports were broadcast on May 31.

About 230 educators, counselors and administrators from area high schools, Monroe Community College and four-year institutions convened Friday on the Brighton Campus to identify and share current best practices in preparing students for college. Attendees also participated in facilitated discipline-specific conversations and in-depth “college knowledge” dialogues.

Attendees represented 15 school districts (including Rochester City School District, East Rochester Union Free School District, and Rush-Henrietta Central School District), four BOCES districts, six colleges and universities (including St. John Fisher College, SUNY Geneseo, and The College at Brockport), and several community-based organizations.

The symposium aimed to close student achievement gaps and strengthen collaborations across educational systems in the area.

Keynote speaker Evelyn Hiatt, with the Oregon-based Education Policy Improvement Center, presented current national research on college readiness. She discussed Common Core standards and four keys to producing high school graduates ready for college-level work.

The Community Center for Teaching Excellence, led by Ann Pennella, and The Division of Interdisciplinary Programs sponsored the symposium.
