Congratulations to Elizabeth Johnston and Demario Brantley!

The office of Global Education and International Services is excited to announce that Dr. Elizabeth Johnston (English and Philosophy) has been awarded the SUNY Russia Programs Network Spring 2017 Travel Award to St. Petersburg, Russia.

The visit will include conference participation at the “On the Other Side” conference panel on Gender, Film and Sexuality, local lectures at the Sociology Department of St. Petersburg State University May 24 – 25, plus one to two other locations, and a visit to Novgorod to discuss possible future program cooperation with SUNY Russia’s colleagues there.

Dr. John Frederick Bailyn, Director, SUNY Russia Programs Network, shared that the nominating committee felt Elizabeth uniquely fit the request for proposals.  Elizabeth’s proposal included three lectures and a conference presentation (see attached), a reflection of her scholarly expertise and creative interests which lie in representations of female iconicity in global popular culture.  Elizabeth will also be exploring opportunities to develop Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) collaborations with her counterparts in St. Petersburg and Novgorod.

This is the second year in a row that Monroe Community College faculty member has been selected for this award.  Dr. Bob Muhlnickel received the award in Spring 2016.

An additional accolade goes to Professor Demario Brantley (Sociology) who has been invited to also present at the “On the Other Side” conference in St. Petersburg, Russia.  Conference director, Mr. Alexander Kondakov, extended the invitation for Demario to present at the conference, which will also commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Centre for Independent Social Research.  Demario’s participation will focus on issues of race, gender, sexuality, and discrimination.
