Njeru Murage Attends Assessment Workshop

History faculty member Njeru Murage attended the New England Educational Assessment Network’s workshop, “Dialogues on Assessment in the Disciplines” on Friday, March 26 at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst campus.  Prof. Murage joined colleagues from history departments across the Northeast in hearing Dr. Norman L. Jones of Utah State University speak about the benefits and pitfalls typically encountered by departments engaging in the assessment of history curricula.  Other workshop activities provided  Prof. Murage the opportunity to discuss assessment issues with history faculty members from other community colleges.

Prof. Murage noted upon his return, “I had been a skeptic of assessment, but the workshop gave me the chance to see both how other colleges have some of the same obstacles in assessment that we do, and also how we can use particular strategies to overcome those obstacles.”  Prof. Murage’s attendance at the workshop was supported by the Office of Academic Assessment, and by the Department of Curriculum and Program Development.
