"Friends" Exhibit kicks off With "Spin the Bottle"

From October 15 through November 24, MCC will host an exhibit called “Friends”, about a DWI fatality that killed four college students in Hamilton, New York.  The exhibit creates an intimate portrait of the promising young people who died and conveys the devastation that their deaths caused for those left behind. Viewing this exhibit is a very intense emotional experience; the goal is to use that emotional response as a catalyst to deter young people from drinking and driving.

As a kick off for the “Friends” exhibit, the Department of Anthropology, History, Political Science and Sociology will host two screenings and discussion of the film Spin the Bottle, in which college students describe their difficulties in navigating a culture that glorifies alcohol abuse. The Brighton film event is on October 15 from 3 till 5 pm in Monroe A; the Damon film event is scheduled for October 16 from 3 till 5 pm in Room 4151.

The“Friends” exhibit is self-guided and will be open to the MCC community and the public on Monday through Friday from 9 am until 7 pm, in the Gilman Lounge (Room 3-114) of the Flynn Campus Center. Reservations can be made to bring larger groups (such as classes) to the exhibit. Also, arrangements can be made for MCC groups to visit the exhibit after-hours if necessary. Please contact Sue Cable for more information at 262-1771 or <"

Both the exhibit and the film offer powerful learning opportunities for students.  Please encourage your students to attend one of the film events and to visit the exhibit. Also, please consider how you might be able to incorporate the film and/or the exhibit into your classroom and/or extracurricular activities.
