Wilson Magnet Victorious in Engineering Competition

Over 200 high school students and 20 teachers, representing 13 area high schools, participated in the sixth annual High School Engineering Contest hosted by MCC yesterday, April 24, at ESL Sports Centre. Wilson Magnet High School was awarded the overall championship trophy, based on the number of points the team accumulated across the three events.

Using materials ranging from metal and wood to cotton balls and Legos, the students used their creativity and problem solving skills in the three areas of competition: SumoBot, Auto Safety (egg crash) and Wooden Bridge (structural design).

"We let the kids take the lead," said Peggy Foos, a computer science and pre-engineering teacher at Wilson Magnet. "We ask them in September what they are interested in building and our goal is to enter the competition. I'm so proud of these kids." Wilson Magnet entered four auto safety cars, four wooden bridges and two SumoBots into the competition.

The results were as follows:

Wooden Bridge:
1st Place: Wilson Magnet High School Team A
2nd Place: Wilson Magnet High School Team B
3rd Place: Fairport High School Team A
4th Place: Fairport High School Team D

SumoBot:
