In September of 2014, the MCC Upward Bound program welcomed two new AmeriCorps members who will serve as program advisors. Mike Churnetski, a 2013 graduate from R.I.T., and Paul Stack, a 2013 graduate from Union College, have quickly jumped into the program by meeting students, tutoring during Math League practice, and bonding with Upward Bound staff. Starting September 29th, they will both spend 4 days a week in high schools, offering tutoring and support to the students in the program and recruiting new ones as well. “I can’t wait to help students problem solve their academic struggles and pass Regents exams” notes Mike. “Also, I’m looking forward to exposing students to college and different interests outside the classroom.” Paul shares “Meeting the students has been fantastic so far! They’re driven, they’re funny, and they don’t hold back what they’re thinking.” Paul is placed at Rochester Early College and Wilson, while Mike will be working with students at North East and World of Inquiry. In addition, both members will be leading college trips with students, planning workshops, advising career exploration, and publishing fantastic newsletters!
