WHAT IS COIL?

The SUNY Center for Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) has developed a model for the creation of co-equal team-taught learning environments where faculty from two cultures work together to develop a shared syllabus, emphasizing experiential and collaborative student learning. Such collaborations range from 4 to 12 weeks and give new contextual meaning to the ideas and texts, while providing students new venues to develop cross-cultural awareness. Classes may be fully online or, more often, offered in blended formats with face-to-face sessions taking place at both schools, while collaborative student work takes place online.

WHAT IS THE COIL COURSE ORIENTATION (CCO)?

The COIL Center has created a Professional Development Program <https://coil.suny.edu/page/professional-development-program>   to assist professors in creating COIL courses or modules. The first step in that program is a fully online 6-week COIL Course Orientation <https://coil.suny.edu/page/coil-course-orientation>  (CCO) which is offered quarterly.

WHEN IS THE NEXT COIL COURSE ORIENTATION (CCO)?

The next COIL Course Orientation (CCO) runs from May 31 – July 7, 2016 and requires about 1-3 hours of your attention per week.

WHO IS AVAILABLE TO HELP ME?

Here at MCC, we have a COIL Faculty Support Team to work with faculty to ensure they are have the help and resources they need.  We help faculty with the CCO, identify an international partner, determine the best technology to use, train in using various technology platforms, provide LibGuides, and much more.  The COIL Faculty Support Team is comprised of Gale Lynch, Director of Global Education and International Services and MCC’s COIL Campus Coordinator; Tom Capuano, Instructional Designer; and Alice Wilson, Assistant Librarian.

DO I GET TO TRAVEL?

SUNY COIL has a funded COIL initiative in Mexico called the US-Mexico Multistate Program (MCP) which includes funding for faculty to visit their Mexican faculty partner.  You must complete this CCO in order to participate in the COIL Academy for Course Development <https://coil.suny.edu/page/academy-coil-course-development> , which is a pre-requisite for joining the MCP.

HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?

There is no registration fee for CCO as it is part of our campus membership in the COIL Center’s Nodal and Global Partner Network.

WHO SHOULD I CONTACT?

If you have questions and/or are interested please contact Gale Lynch, Director of Global Education and International Services – glynch6@monroecc.edu <mailto:glynch6@monroecc.edu>  or 292-3173.
