Students Compete in annual TYESA Competition

Two student teams from Monroe Community College earned fourth and fifth place awards at the Two Year Engineering Science Association of New York State (TYESA) competition at Broome Community College on May 2, 2003. MCC's Engineering Science and Physics Professor John Wadach, who also serves as president of TYESA, helped the teams prepare for the annual competition.

The two MCC teams, entering originally designed cars named Metal Mouse and Total Package, competed in what is often referred to as the "vehicle olympics," comprising sprint, slalom and pull/lift events. Metal Mouse placed fourth and Total Package tied for fifth.

According to Brad Whitlock, an MCC freshman majoring in electrical engineering, "Our strategy was to make the car as simple as possible. We designed and built the prototype quickly in order to focus on the electronics." Whitlock was proud to also add that the car's maximum speed was 53" per second.

A total of nine teams participated in the competition. Jefferson Community College teams took first and second place. Binghamton University's car edged out MCC by one point to take third place.
