The Sixth Act Upcoming Event

The Sixth Act is pleased to announce our upcoming “Stein Salon” on Wednesday, November 4, from 2-4 PM, in the Mercer Gallery at MCC. We’re REALLY excited for this event and think its honoring of the multi-disciplinary electricity of Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas’s Parisian salons in the early twentieth century might complement curriculum across campus. This is what we’re doing:

-Kathy Farrell (VaPA) will curate a film exhibit that will play continuously in the North Atrium the week prior to the event. These films will focus on the entire modernist movement, especially Gertrude Stein

-Kathy Farrell and Dawn Murphy  (VaPA) will curate an art exhibit of modernist work (the kind that might have hung on Stein and Toklas’ walls in Paris) to be viewed during the Stein Salon

-The Stein Salon itself will include (1) a brief introduction to the modernist movement and to Stein as a modern playwright by Maria Brandt (ENG), (2) a scene from Stein’s experimental play “Dr Faustus Lights the Lights,” performed by Heather Fox’s VaPA students, and followed by an “intellectually invigorating” conversation with audience members, (3) a brief introduction to Stein as a “collector” of artists and writers by Dawn Murphy and Jchris Senden (ENG), (4) a collaborative reading (by all audience members) of Stein’s work led by Tony Leuzzi (ENG), and finally (5) a collaborative exquisite-corpse creation (by all audience members), led by Kathy Farrell
