May's Food of the Month is Berries

Did you know there are seven types of berries you should eat every day? According to Global Health Healing these seven berries are extremely high in antioxidants – Goji Berries, Blueberries, Acai Berries, Bilberries, Strawberries, Blackberries and Cherries. Bilberries are also known as Huckleberry, Wineberry and Dyeberry. Check out this website for more information about each of these berries.

Cooking Light.com has several healthy berry recipes such as Toasted Barley and Berry Granola, Summer Berry Medley with Limoncello and Mint and Summer Mint Sparkling Limeade to name a few.  Check out their website for more.

BUT…Have you ever heard of barberry or bearberry? Buffalo berry or bunchberry? Cowberry or Farkleberry? We are all familiar strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries and cherries and their health benefits. However, there are many more berries to be found in the wild. Some are safe to eat and others are quite toxic. How do we know which ones are safe? Always consult a field guide to accurately identify any new berry you discover in the wild before eating it.  For an A-Z listing of berries go to the Gardening Channel website.
