Earth Day is Wednesday, April 22

Earth Day is an annual event to promote ecology and respect for life on the planet, as well as to encourage awareness of the growing problems of air, water and soil pollution.

At Damon, the Student Events and Governance Association (SEGA) and Toni Custodio, Associate Director, Campus Events & Services, have teamed up in planning a presentation on the ecosystem which will be held in the DCC 4th floor student lounge from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Representatives from Waste Management, RGRTA (Rochester Genesee Regional Transportation Authority), and Home Depot will be in attendance.

There will be an Earth Day program hosted in Tribune Hall Lobby from 7:30 – 9:30 p.m. Residents will be asked to sign a pledge to be greener. Along with signing the pledge, residents will be given the Green Res Hall Checklist. A large tree will be mounted in the lobby of Tribune Hall where the leaves will be hung once the pledge is signed, and the leaves will hang for the remainder of the semester. All buildings will have the pledge available to sign. Wall-E, the Disney film, will be shown, and residents can pick up the Green Res Hall Checklists in their individual lobbies.

At the same time the pledge is being signed, they will be running a Shrinky Dinks program. This craft utilizes recycled plastic #6, and students will be able to make key chains or ornaments.

The Sustainability Steering Committee sponsors the Green Office Program. The program’s goal is to have every office make the commitment to reduce overall energy consumption and to reduce the college’s environmental impact by conserving and recycling resources. Earth Day would be a great time to complete an application for the program; that application and a complete list of participants are on our website: https://www.monroecc.edu/depts/sustainability/GreenOfficeProgram.htm
