Peer Mentor Project: Helping a Family in Need.

In early May a house fire on Ketchum St. in the city forced a local family of a single mother and her 4 children literally out onto the streets of Rochester. They lost everything in the fire and have nothing. Right now they are staying with relatives and are hopefully going to move into a new apartment soon.

When the Peer Mentors heard about this family and that the 4th graders at the Charter School of Science and Technology tried to help out by holding their own fundraiser they knew they had to get involved.  So, the Peer Mentors decided to “adopt” this family to help them get back on their feet and we can’t do it alone.  So, we are asking for the help of the entire college community.

Since this family is basically starting over their needs are many, but here is a list of items that are urgently needed:

Clothing.  The three girls are sizes 8/9 and 10/12 and the little boy is growing into a 3-T. The mother is a size 13/14. Shirts, dresses, sneakers, socks, etc. and especially WINTER coats, hats, scarves and gloves are needed.

All types of School Supplies.  Backpacks, notebooks, folders, pens, pencils, markers, etc. for each of the kids
Toiletries including towels, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes and shampoo
Board games and children’s books
Simple living room furniture like chairs, lamps and a table
Dishes, silverware and glasses for the kitchen
Non perishable food items
A simple stereo, radio, or tv
Gift Cards to grocery stores, bookstores, toy stores, etc. will also be appreciated and accepted.

That is just a sample of the needs this family has. Any little bit would help. We are not expected to give the family everything brand new but please … no junk.  Please also let your family, friends and classmates know about this list.  We can use all the help we can get!

This family will also be the recipient of the Peer Mentors’ Annual Thanksgiving and Christmas food drives, so look for flyers around the holiday season which will give out more details for holiday food donations. ALSO, look for details about the lunch we will be hosting on campus on August 10th for the children of this family.

All donations will be accepted through August 9th in the Peer Assistance Resource Center, 1-108.  If you have any questions, please call 292-2552.

We have confidence that we can all do something that will make a big difference in this family’s life.  Thank you!  We appreciate your support.
