Certified Nursing Assistants Week Begins Today

"Compassion in Action" is the theme of National Certified Nursing Assistants Week, June 12 -19, 2003. Monroe Community College is doing its part by also celebrating the success of its Nursing Assistant Certification program and the impact it has on the Greater Rochester community. Posters have been designed to commemorate the event on the Brighton and Damon City campuses.

Over 160 certified nursing assistant (CNA) students are trained and prepared for New York state certification each year at MCC's Damon City Campus. A series of 13 three-week training sessions are conducted throughout the academic year at the new CNA Training Center, which opened in September 2002.

"This is the first year MCC is commemorating the event," said Sharon Scurlock, secretary, Division of Science, Health and Business/Certified Nursing Assistant Training Center. "It's a fun way to promote classroom interaction between students and faculty. We're taking small steps now, but plan to build upon the event each year."

Working under the supervision of a nurse, certified nursing assistants interact with patients and provide assistance with daily living tasks. They also relay important feedback on the patient's health condition to the nurse. They work within a variety of settings, including nursing homes, hospitals, adult day health centers, assisted living facilities and even personal homes.
