Upward Bound Student Attends the Rochester Perry Outreach Program

For the last two years Upward Bound students have been selected through a rigorous application process to attend the Rochester Perry Outreach Program (POP) at the University of Rochester Medical School. POP is designed to encourage young women to pursue careers in the Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) fields. This is done through the exploration of orthopedic surgery and biomechanical engineering experiments. This year senior Taniah was chosen to participate in POP.

During the day-long program the participants preform mock surgeries and learn how to prepare sutures on a chicken wing. Participants were also give the chance to drill into prosthetic bone. Taniah’s dream is to become an orthopedic surgeon, so this opportunity was a perfect experience for her. Taniah says, “I liked the workshops. I had the opportunity to build external fixations. It was a great opportunity and it was fun.”
