Issues Saving Documents to External Storage

ETS/CNS has been made aware of an issue that some of our users have been experiencing saving files while in Microsoft Office (primarily from Microsoft Word) to USB thumb drives, floppy drives, or to certain locations on the campus network.  When attempting to save to one of these locations, an error may be produced similar to one of the following:

“Word cannot complete the save due to a file permission error"
"Check the drive to make sure the door is closed and contains the correct disk or CD"

The PC in question may generate a “blue screen” error, and subsequently reboot.  The original file may also be removed.

This issue is a known problem with Symantec Endpoint Protection, the Anti-Virus software installed on MCC computers.  Symantec is aware of the problem and is actively working toward resolution.

In the interim, we suggest that all users working on documents stored on USB thumb drives, floppy disks, or the MCC network copy their file to the desktop of their PC and save changes to this location. Once file editing is complete, move the document back to your USB/floppy drive or network location.

Thank you for your patience while we work to resolve this issue.
