MCC's Surgical Technology Program Accredited Through 2022

The commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) informed MCC of its vote on November 17, 2017 to award initial accreditation to the Surgical Technology program.
The recent peer review conducted by the Accreditation Review Council on Education in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (ARC/STSA) and CAAHEP's Board of Directors recognizes the program's substantial compliance with the nationally established accreditation standards. The accreditation standards are established by CAAHEP, ARC/STSA, American College of Surgeons (ACS), and the Association of Surgical Technologist (AST).

This program offers an Associate in Applied Science Degree, and is designed to prepare Surgical Technologist who practice under medical supervision to facilitate safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures. The individual works as a member of the surgical team under the supervision of the circulating nurse and surgeon to ensure that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. Surgical technologists possess expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combine knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a physician's performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. Graduates of Surgical Technology programs are prepared to work in a variety of settings including inpatient hospital operating rooms, outpatient surgery centers, emergency rooms and central supply.

Surgical Technology is housed in the Department of Nursing, and is a two year program with a fall only start date (includes one summer session). Graduates of the program will be required to pass a national certification exam.

Please join me in congratulating the individuals responsible for this achievement - specifically Mary Seely, Program Director, and Laurie Palmer, Department Chair, for thorough jobs done well!
