Now Recruiting Emerging Entrepreneurs for the Spring 2009 Semester!

MCC’s Business Administration/Economics Department is seeking applicants for its Emerging Entrepreneur Scholarship Program for the Spring 2009 semester. The 15-week program covers the cost of tuition, student fees and text books and gives students the tools to learn how to start and manage their own small businesses in today’s economy. Students will be enrolled in a three credit business class with day, evening and online classes available, starting on Jan. 20, 2009.

Additional program information, including a downloadable application, can be viewed online at www.monroecc.edu/go/newbiz. Applications must be received by Monday, Dec. 8.

Participants in the program will learn about the nature of small business in today’s economy. This includes identifying the opportunities available for small businesses, understanding the legal forms of ownership, franchising and building a business plan, as well as developing marketing strategies that will best reach potential customers on a shoestring budget. Participants will also have the opportunity to work with business partners in the area—such as the Small Business Development Center—to help them further develop their current or prospective businesses.

To be considered for the scholarship, applicants must be interested in starting a business within the next 12 months, a resident of Monroe County for the past six months and not receiving funding from another program that pays full tuition. The program is especially interested in business ideas related to art and music, machine and construction trades, medical services, food industry, tourism, and personal services.

This program is separate from MCC’s standard enrollment procedure. Thirty participants will be chosen to participate in the Spring 2009 semester, which begins on Jan. 20 and runs through May 15, 2009. For further information, contact Assistant Professor Sherry Tshibangu, Business Administration/Economics, at 292.3256 or by email at newbiz@monroecc.edu.
