"Selma" - Providing Space for Community Discussion

Rochester AmeriCorps wanted this Martin Luther King Jr. Day to be more than just a day off for our members and the community. For the 80 people who attended the private screening of the movie Selma at the Little Theatre on Monday, the day was enhanced through a powerful performance of integral moments in the Civil Rights Movement and its leaders. An excellent mix of current AmeriCorps members, alums, RCSD employees, community agencies and members of the public were in attendance.

A community member noted, “I appreciated seeing all the children there. Speaking to our youth honestly about history allows them to not only see where they came from, but to also have the courage to persevere into the future.”

After the movie, attendees stayed for a discussion about how the events of the movie have influenced our lives today and how to continue to move forward. AmeriCorps member Carly Dettman commented, “We have so far to go to bring justice and equality to all people in our community, but I am confident that each time we involve ourselves in these important conversations, we get a little closer to finding and creating solutions.”
