Hospitals, Higher Education and Hoops with Liberty Partnerships Program

The MCC Liberty Partnerships Program was at it again, filling a school vacation with career and college oriented activities for our participants, who are RCSD students, during April break. They had the opportunity to tour Rochester General Hospital and take a day trip to Syracuse University.

On Monday, students met at DCC to enjoy lunch before heading to Rochester General Hospital. The students took a tour of RGH which included stops in the central stores, where all of the hospital supplies are kept, the cardiac floor, and the lab. One group even got to watch as their tour guide had blood drawn! (Luckily, only the chaperones felt nauseous!) After their tour, the students went to a lecture hall where employees of the RGH educational team lead the group through training activities that new hospital employees would go through. Students practiced proper hand washing, how to apply restraints to a disorderly patient, and how to operate a lift which helps move patients from one location to another.  The day finished with a presentation from the Youth Apprenticeship Program, which provides part time jobs for RCSD students interested in the medical field. A number of LPP students were very interested in that opportunity!

Early Wednesday morning, the students loaded a bus and headed to Syracuse University which was the trip many students have been waiting for since September! The day started with an hour walking tour of the campus, and in spite of a little bit of wind, it was a perfect day to be walking around campus! Students had the opportunity to see many academic buildings, as well as the famed Carrier Dome where SU football, basketball and lacrosse teams play. Along the way students asked many questions regarding college life on a large campus. The students also attended an admissions presentation where they learned not only about SU admissions, but also gained valuable information regarding the college application process. The students ate lunch in the new dining hall on campus as well – many trays were stacked full, and each student walked out with dessert to go! The last stop on the trip was to the Carmello Anthony Center, which is where the training facilities, athletics offices, and SU Basketball Hall of Fame are located. The LPP students even had the opportunity to check out the basketball training rooms and coaches’ offices!

The LPP program has several events remaining for students during the 2014-15 school year, and is now focused on planning a series of exciting, educational, and excellent trips for the Summer Program, running from July 7-July 24.

MCC’s Liberty Partnerships Program is funded by the New York State Department of Education.
