A Stellar Summer for the Future Educators Club

The Future Educators Club (FEC) of MCC has had a busy summer building bridges in our communities.

In late June, MCC students traveled to Boston, MA for the annual Educators Rising conference. In attendance were Hailey Wiest, Michael Delaney, Patty McCasland, Andre Medlock, Samantha Cooney, Amberlynn Watrous, Remy Ceraulo, Hailey Merry, Sherna St. Clair and Marissa Powers, with Professors Rick Costanza and Aimee Shaver.

Students participated in a multi-day event with other future educators from around the country. Students presented two workshops, “Financial Literacy” and “Group Dynamics”. Wiest, Delaney, St. Clair, Powers and Shaver were selected as competition judges for two days and gained practical experience with project-based assessments. Hailey Merry participated in the Children’s Literature competition and won 1st place in the Higher Education division with a book she authored and illustrated, “Riley’s First Cross Check” a book about Multiple Sclerosis and hockey. St. Clair and Powers participated in the Children’s Literature competition and won 2nd place in the Higher Education division with a book they co-authored and illustrated, “Missing Iggy” a book about a lost classroom pet.

The Future Educators Club of MCC was invited to participate in the annual Summer Bash with Parenting Village at Rothfuss Park in July. Patty McCasland, vice-president of community projects, demonstrated several literacy kits that our department creates to encourage parents to participate in hands-on activities after reading books with their children. The club also created a Quiet Bag Swap where parents sign up to create 10 of the same quiet bag, and then the club will complete the exchange leaving each family with 10 different activities to engage young children.

This August, the FEC collaborated with SEGA on our first fundraiser of the year. Both clubs met at Frontier Field to volunteer at the “Homeplate”. Friendships were created among these leaders with many plans to have 2016-17 be a fabulous year for all clubs as we begin to say our goodbyes to the Sibley building and prepare for a strong partnership at the NEW State Street campus!
