On March 5th, 2007, a car bomb exploded on Al-Mutanabbi Street in Baghdad, killing more than thirty people and injuring more than one hundred more. Al-Mutanabbi Street was the historic center of Baghdad bookselling, a winding street filled with bookstores and outdoor book stalls. This attack was a shocking attempt to interrupt intellectual exchanges and access to information.
The Global Education and International Services Office has partnered with the Rochester Central Library to bring Beau Beausoleil, founder of the Al-Mutanabbi Street Starts Here Coalition to MCC, Friday June 6th from 9:00-11:00 am in the Warshof Conference Center, Flynn Campus Center (Monroe A).
Mr. Beausoleil, a San Francisco poet and bookseller, could not let this event fade into a footnote of war, so he formed the Al-Mutanabbi Street Coalition which led to the publication of an anthology of poetry contributed by writers from all over the world, a visual response from artists that now travels the world, and community events around the country.
MCC’s program will include a welcome from Dr. Kress, Mr. Beausoleil’s presentation, time for questions and answers, and a book signing by Mr. Beausoleil. The LeRoy V Good Library is also hosting part of the visual response from world artists.
