Spread the good news for our students: Changes to the Federal Pell Grant Program

With the signing into law of the Higher Education Opportunity Act in August of 2008, the federal government has made several significant changes to the Federal Pell grant program. First, for the 2009-2010 academic year, the maximum Pell Grant will be increased from $4,731 to $5,350. This increase to the maximum Pell Grant award is effective on July 1, 2009. Second, students who are eligible to receive a Pell Grant and enroll for the summer term, will no longer have their spring Pell grant reduced as a result of receiving a Pell Grant during the previous summer term. Lastly, student’s receiving federal aid for the first time beginning with the 2009-10 academic year, will be limited to a maximum of 12 semesters of eligibility for the Federal Pell Grant program.  Students who have received a Pell grant prior to the 2009-10 academic year will not have this limitation.
