Are You Nominating a Colleague for the Hanson Excellence in Teaching Award?

Monroe Community College is extremely fortunate to have many wonderful teachers. The purpose of the Hanson award is to recognize the truly best among them. Unlike other awards that give equal consideration to the other work teachers at MCC do, such as Service to the Community, this award is focused on teaching.

What makes a great teacher? The subject has been debated throughout history. Socrates himself said, “I cannot teach anybody anything, I can only make them think.” Aristotle said that “educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.” An ancient Chinese proverb states “tell me and I’ll forget, show me and I may remember, involve me and I’ll understand.” And the debate continues: the headline of the cover story of the March 7th New York Times Magazine is “Building a Better Teacher.”

Attached is a list of criteria and some materials you may wish to include in your submissions on March 26th.  Please note that these are all suggestions, not requirements. Indeed, it would be extremely difficult to include all these items in a fifteen page document.

Individual teachers will have individual strengths. There are some things they will all have in common – they are passionate, engaged, and maintain rigorous standards in the classroom. They are committed to helping students achieve those standards, recognizing that not everyone can earn A’s. They find the potential in the quietest student, and adjust to the liveliest to help them learn – and more importantly, help them love to learn. Most of all, they are the ones who will have an impact on individual students that will last a lifetime.
