Biology Professor Ernie Mellas Awarded $10,000 GLISTEN grant

MCC Biology Professor Ernie Mellas, along with colleagues Dr. James Haynes (SUNY College at Brockport) and Dr. Karl Korfmacher (Rochester Institute of Technology), have been awarded a $10,000 implementation grant to establish a Lake Ontario Cluster of GLISTEN (Great Lakes Innovative Stewardship Through Education Network).

The focus of the GLISTEN initiative is to: promote and educate the local community about the natural resources of the great lakes and local environmental issues of the Lake Ontario watershed, and to promote volunteer stewardship opportunities with local community partners. The monetary award is being used to hire three student liaisons and place them in the field working on environmental projects with the grant’s three community partners.

Tracy Wilcox (pictured below second from left) was hired as the MCC student liaison and has been working this summer with the US Fish and Wildlife Service, Buffalo Office under the supervision of Dr. Raymond Li. Tracy has been working with Dr. Li on a culvert assessment project and a freshwater mussel survey with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, Avon office. Tracy will work with Professor Mellas to present her summer work experience and research to selected MCC Biology classes this fall semester. MCC alumna Samantha Gonzales is the RIT GLISTEN student liaison working with the Wayne County Soil and Water Conservation District.
