Upward Bound Program --  Nutrition Workshop 2012

On December 12th, the Upward Bound Program at DCC hosted a nutrition workshop which was facilitated by the Bridges to Wellness Program. Through this workshop, the students learned how to read nutrition labels and the importance of eating healthy. One experiment involved students to correctly read the labels and identify the amount of sugar that was put into the various drinks. The result was quite shocking, and the students themselves were surprised to see the quantity of sugar they were consuming on a daily basis.

The workshop also consisted of making snacks in a healthy way as well as enjoying them. The students helped the workshop facilitators in making guacamole dip using organic ingredients that had far less calories than ordinary salsa dips sold in supermarkets. The outcome was a success, considering that everyone had wiped their plates clean.
