What's in a Hoodie? A Candid Discussion on Race Relations in America

Weeks of Welcome, sponsored by the Civility Project
Presents
What’s in a Hoodie?
(A candid discussion on race relations in America)

Several programs are being formed on college campuses across America to sponsor "Intergroup Dialogues" on several different diversity issues that are impacting our daily lives, or better yet, the way we interact and react to our environment.  Bringing college students, faculty and staff together to talk with one another across boundaries is a complex and challenging endeavor. In fact, efforts to foster positive intergroup conversations around issues of diversity, conflict, community, and social justice utilize a variety of approaches. In some, the focus is on reducing prejudice by examining similarities of experience; others emphasize issues of dominance and social justice or encourage meaningful inquiry into relations between self and others.

The Gorge Zimmerman verdict brought out some challenging assumptions about race in America.  It started a new national discussion, (especially on college campuses) starting with something as simple as the “Hoodie”.  The purpose of this program is to take a close look at the hidden bias that often goes unspoken in our society and surfaces in unexpected ways.  It’s something President Obama addressed in his remarks following the Zimmerman verdict.

Please join us to hear this discussion with special guests Mr. James Sheppard, Chief of Police of the Rochester Police Department, Reverend Lawrence Hargraves, Pastor of Outreach Ministries, Asbury First Church; Professor Jonathan Iuzzini, Teaching & Creativity Center and Professor Natasha Christensen, Anthropology, History, Sociology and Political Science.  Professor Karen Morris, Business Administration will be the moderator for this event.
