Homeland Security Management Institute Launches Academic Courses

In the Spring 2014 semester, HSMI is launching its first courses in Homeland Security.

The “Introduction to Emergency Management (HSM 101)” is a 3 credit hour course intended to provide information that will enable persons just entering the profession or expanding their roles to have the ability to work with emergency management issues. The course provides an overview of the characteristics, functions, and resources of an integrated system and how various emergency management services work together in an integration of resources and capabilities. In addition, this course will provide an analysis of current actions and threats impacting emergency management. Emphasis will be placed on how this system is applied to all hazards for all government levels, across the four phases and all functions of emergency management. This course will be taught by Mary Louise Meisenzahl, the former Emergency Manager for Monroe County, at the Public Safety Training Facility, 1190 Scottsville Road on Monday evenings (January 27th through May 15th, 2014) from 6-9PM.

The “Historical and Contemporary Perspectives on Terrorism and Homeland Security (HSM103)” is a 3 credit –hour Social Science elective and a “SUNY Gen Ed” course applicable to the SUNY American History requirement. Terrorism and defending against it are not modern concepts. In fact, terrorism has its roots in America back to the Revolutionary War. This course is about understanding terrorism, counter-terrorism, violence, and how they have impacted America. Students will learn about historical examples of terrorism beginning with the Revolutionary War and extending through the post 9/11 period. Course content will include coverage of various terrorist events at home and abroad, America’s governmental response, its impact to public and private sectors and individuals. Students will also learn about how past and current experiences with terrorism are defining future strategies. This course will be taught by COL Paul Ciminelli, a local attorney and Army Colonel, at the Monroe Community College Brighton Campus on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons (January 21st through May 22nd, 2014) from 2-3:30PM.

Both of these courses are listed in the MCC Course Catalog and Student Handbook.
