Save the Date: Al-Mutanabbi Street Starts Here Founder Beau Beausoleil

The Global Education and International Services Office has partnered with the Rochester Central Library to bring Beau Beausoleil, founder of the Al-Mutanabbi Street Starts Here Coalition to MCC, Friday June 6th from 9:00-11:00 am in the Warshof Conference Center, Flynn Campus Center (Monroe A).

On March 5th, 2007, a car bomb exploded on al-Mutanabbi Street in Baghdad killing more than thirty people and injuring more than one hundred more. Al-Mutanabbi Street was the historic center of Baghdad bookselling, a winding street filled with bookstores and outdoor book stalls. This attack was a shocking attempt to interrupt intellectual exchanges and access to information.

Mr. Beausoleil, a San Francisco poet and bookseller, could not let this event fade into a footnote of war, so he formed the Al-Mutanabbi Street Coalition which led to the publication of an anthology of poetry contributed by writers from all over the world,  a visual response from artists that now travels the world, and community events around the country.

Please join us in attending this presentation about the silent consequences of war and watch for a variety of community events co-sponsored by MCC and the Central Library around Rochester this spring and summer.

RSVP: Holly Wheeler at <mailto:hwheeler@monroecc.edu>.

Mr. Beausoleil’s visit is co-sponsored by the Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights Project and the Creative Arts Committee.
