Downtown Campus Fire Alarm/Emergency Evacuation Procedure

When the fire alarm sounds, act immediately to ensure your safety. The Fire Alarm System is designed and engineered to provide you with an early warning to allow you to safely exit the building during an emergency situation.

All personnel should familiarize themselves with the following procedure:

  • Stay calm; do not panic. Do not assume it is a fire drill. Quickly gather your personal belongings if it is safe to do so.
  • Evacuate the building via the closest exit stairwell. Do not use elevators.* If you are the last person out of the room, close the door behind you to keep fire from spreading into nearby rooms.
  • Once outside, stay on the sidewalk, proceed to the front of the building and cross Morrie Silver Way. Assemble in Parking Lot AA. Public Safety personnel will be present, stopping road traffic, to allow for safe crossing.
  • Wait for direction from Public Safety personnel. Do not re-enter the building until told to do so.

* Impaired Mobility

If your mobility is impaired and you are not able to evacuate via the stairs, proceed to the Northeast (E) or South (B) Stairwell, whichever is closer, and wait for assistance from Public Safety or emergency personnel. (Stairwells E and B are currently marked with "Area of Rescue Assistance" signs to assist in their identification.) If these stairwells are not accessible due to fire or smoke, proceed to another stairwell. All stairwells are checked during an emergency.

If imminent danger from fire or smoke occurs while waiting for assistance, move inside the stairwell. If possible, call Public Safety (292-2911) to report your location. Enclosed stairwells provide fire protection for at least 2 hours. Position yourself on the landing such that you do not block or impede pedestrian flow or access to the stairwell.
