Scholarship Opportunities Offered through the Biology Department


The MCC Biology Department offers two scholarships each year.  We are currently accepting applications for the following scholarship opportunities:

The Jennifer Jaruzel Scholarship:  This scholarship acknowledges an outstanding biology student at MCC.  The scholarship is attended to assist students  who plan to complete an advisement sequence in biology.

Eligibility Requirements

1.     Currently registered full-time in a biology advisement sequence
2.     Completed a minimum of 7 credits of Biology at MCC
3.     Overall GPA of 3.25 or above

Application Materials:

1.     Completed application (available from the biology department), a 200-300 word essay, typed and double spaced, describing your educational plans, ambitions, and reasons you believe you qualify for a Biology scholarship. 
2.     Completed student biographical data form (available from the Biology Department).
3.     Copy of transcript through December 31, 2011.
4.     Two letters of recommendation from MCC faculty members (at least one must be from a Biology instructor).

The Thomas R. Kissel Memorial Scholarship:  This scholarship recognizes an outstanding student in biotechnology or chemistry.

Eligibility Requirements

1.     Recipient must be a full time student who will have successfully completed two semesters at MCC with a minimum 3.0 GPA at the end of Spring 2012.
2.     Major field of concentration must be biotechnology or chemistry.
3.     Preference will be given to a Monroe County resident.

Application Materials:

1.     A completed application form (available from the Biology Department Office, 8– 220, or on-line through the MCC Biology Department website).
2.     A brief essay (250-300 words) written by the applicant that describes the student’s educational goals at MCC, career goals upon leaving MCC, and qualities they possess that make them deserving of this award.
3.     Copy of transcript through December 31, 2011.
4.     Letters of reference from two MCC faculty members.  At least one of the letters must come from an instructor in the Natural Sciences (e.g. biology, chemistry, geosciences or physics).

The deadline for submission of materials for these scholarships is Friday, April 13th, 2012.
