This year, two Upward Bound (UB) female students were selected for the competitive Perry Initiative event at the University of Rochester’s medical school. It was the fourth year that UB students were accepted and the first time multiple UB students were admitted to the one-day intensive.
The January 21 event exposed them to orthopedics, rehabilitation, and community health. Health professionals showed students from over 20 high schools how they fix bones and explained their daily work routine. The schedule included workshops on suturing, scoliosis, complex fractures, and knee ligament restructuring. UB students got to work with other girls in small group activities. One activity involved them sewing a pigskin back together. Senior UB student Fatuma said, “I want to be in the medical field, and it led me to consider orthopedics as an option.”
Upward Bound continues to provide shadowing opportunities for our students to explore potential career interests.
