Basketball Court Named in Honor of Monagan

On June 27, the MCC Board of Trustees voted to officially name the MCC basketball court “Monagan Court” after George C. Monagan, one of the College’s original faculty members and founder of its athletic program.

Monagan worked at MCC for over 26 years, most notably as the College’s first athletic director. Elected as the first president of the New York State University Junior Athletic Conference, Monagan was instrumental in bringing the National Youth Sports Program (NYSP) to MCC in 1971 – a program now in its 36th year. The vision and guidance he provided  was instrumental in NYSP earning the 2001 Silvio O. Conte Award of Excellence.

He also launched and coordinated MCC’s associate degree program in recreation leadership and received the MCC Wesley T. Hanson Award for Excellence in Teaching, recognizing his academic achievement and community service.

Prior to his career at MCC, Monagan served in the Navy during WWII and then as a teacher and coach at the Penfield Central School District (1950-1954). He became the athletic director at McQuaid Jesuit High School (1954-1962). Monagan retired from MCC in 1988, after which he continued to serve the College community as a volunteer for almost two decades. He died unexpectedly on May 20, 2006, at age 79.

The College will hold a dedication ceremony in the fall to honor Monagan's legacy and the lasting impact his life and work has made on students, colleagues and the College at large.
