Sen. Gillibrand Visits Sibley Building to Promote Jobs for Urban Youths

U.S. Sen. Gillibrand toured the YouthBuild construction lab on the second floor of the Sibley Building, met with a few of the YouthBuild program participants, and held a news conference there to promote the proposed Urban Jobs program on Friday morning, May 6.

Joining Gillibrand was President Kress, County Executive Brooks, Mayor Richards and William Clark of Urban League.

Gillibrand's proposed legislation is aimed at increasing employment among at-risk youth ages 18-24. The proposed Urban Jobs Program would provide federal funding to nonprofit organizations, allowing them to carry out programming to prepare youth for employment, particularly benefiting high school dropouts or those who have been involved in the criminal justice process. The program would provide a holistic approach for preparing youth.

YouthBuild is a collaboration among MCC, Urban League, Rochester City School District and Flower City Habitat for Humanity. The program prepares low-income Monroe County residents ages 18-24 for careers in construction . Students take GED preparation classes and receive hands-on trades training, and earn industry credential.
